Face a Book (FaB) Challenge is a summer reading program to promote a strong reading habit during the summer holidays, followed by year-long activities to evaluate its effectiveness. FaB aims to create a long-term commitment among students, who will be asked to visit the website regularly and engage in activities related to their reading habits.
The primary objectives of Face a Book project are:
1. To help students to enjoy reading more and motivate them by providing them with a fun way to encourage their reading abilities.
2. To create an environment where students can develop their love for books and reading.
3. To provide students with opportunities to read independently and interact with other students in an enjoyable way.
What is the Face a Book challenge?
The Face a Book Challenge is an online reading and writing competition run by the National Library Board (NLB). The NLB encourages students to read books written by Singaporeans and other cultures, while they are studying at secondary schools.
How does it work?
Students join the challenge by logging into the official website: www.nlb.gov.sg/faceabookchallenge/. Each student must submit their name, school, grade, and favorite book title. They can also upload up to three photos of themselves as well as a short description of their favorite book.
Challenges and rewards
The NLB will select 100 books from a database of over 1,000 titles for each school to read for the challenge. Students who complete all six levels of the challenge will be rewarded with prizes such as teddy bears, notebooks, stationery sets, or even laptops!
What are the incentives for the students?
One incentive for students is that they will receive a free copy of their favorite book after they have completed all six levels of the challenge!
Reading has a lot of benefits that are often overlooked, such as improving your vocabulary, enhancing your imagination, broadening your perspectives about people and cultures, etc.
If a student reads quickly then he or she is more often than not going to ace his or her exams with flying colors.
It’s been proven time and again that those who read frequently can hold the attention of the class better and express themselves effectively, which directly translates into impressive grades.
Furthermore, reading allows students to be more creative while helping them develop their critical thinking skills. With all these benefits, why shouldn’t students spend at least one hour every day reading?
